The other day I went to clean my kitchen floor with my handy Swiffer Wet Jet (a necessity when you have little ones) only to find that I had run out of the disposable pads. Oh no! The thought of rounding up my kids, getting them strapped in their car seats and enduring a Target run was not at all appealing to me…neither was getting on my hands and knees with a rag, so as I stood there staring at my padless Swiffer the idea of making my own popped into my head. Why not?
I now no longer have to spend money on the disposable pads because these get thrown in the laundry and can be used over an over. Best part is that they are environmentally friendly. Why did I not think of this before?
All you need is an old towel, some Velcro and 10 minutes.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Old Towel
- 18” of Loop velcro
- Sissors/Rotery Cutter
- Ruler
- Thread
GATHER MATERIALS
MEASURE & CUT
Measure and cut your towel into rectangles the size of the mop head
The swiffer wet jet will use a 11” x 4.5” pad
SERGE OR ZIG-ZAG THE EDGES
Using a serger or zig zag stitch, sew around the perimeter of the towel to prevent fraying
ATTACH VELCRO
Cut your Velcro to a length that is 1” shorter than the pad on either side (this will be approximately 9” for the Wet Jet)
Place the Velcro on either side of the long side of the pad about 3/4” in from the edge (no need to be exact, just make sure the velcro lines up with the actual mop head)
Sew the Velcro in place
FINISHED!
You’re done! It takes mere minutes to whip a few of these up and no more running out of pads :)
GREAT idea...love it!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your swiffer. I have one which I use A LOT!! You have solved my problem nicely. Keep up the good work. I will keep watching for things from you.

Omg no way! How didn't I think of that? I used to have a shark steamer which had disposable pads! Looks like I'll be running to get cheap terrycloth towels before my swifter pads run out.
ReplyDeleteLove this! I'm definitely going to make a couple of these.
ReplyDeleteI just bought a WetJet yesterday as we're installing Pergo in our family room, and between that, the hardwood in our living and dining rooms and the ceramic tile in our kitchen, it will get a ton of use! But I don't see the joy in buying all those refill pads. I can't sew to save my life, but this is an awesome idea. Maybe I'll ask my super crafty mom-in-law to make a few for me! :)
ReplyDeleteFYI: libman mops, made in USA, are better sturdier than the Swiftwer and use this concept. Comes with 2 washable, flipable pads. Under $20.
ReplyDeletewash clothes work too and dont' have to be hemmed just add the velcro!!
ReplyDeleteI have tons of burp clothes from when my kiddos were babies, these would be perfect!
ReplyDeletedid you mean 18" of velcro?
ReplyDeleteYup! Typo. It has been changed. Thanks!
DeleteGreat idea! I want to make some, but what does the velcro (loop side) stick too?
ReplyDeleteThe bottom of the mop itself has the hook side.
