Fabric Coasters

 

This week’s scrappy saturday project is FABRIC COASTERS. 
These little guys are simple to make, don’t take much time, and make a wonderful gift.  Even better, this gives you a reason to play with all those neat quilting stitches on your sewing machine!

This project will take about 10 minutes per coaster.

 

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

> fabric scraps
> fusible fleece scraps (you can use batting also)
> coordinating thread

 

 

STEP 1

1. Being aware of design/pattern placement, cut your fabric into 4.5” squares
   You will need 2 squares per coaster  
2. Cut one 4” square of fusible fleece for each coaster (if using batting, cut it 4.5” square)
3. Iron the fusible fleece to the wrong side of one of  the fabric squares (repeat for all coasters)
   If you are using batting, you will skip this step and sew the batting into the coaster
   

STEP 2

1. With wrong sides together, sew one square with the fusible fleece to the other side without
   (If using batting, place the batting down first, a square right side up on top and the other square right side down)
2. Using a 1/4” seam allowance, begin sewing about 1” in from a corner
   
3. Sew all the way around the square (stopping to lift the needle and turn at the corners)
   leaving a 1-2” opening for turning
   
4. Clip the corners of the square as close to the thread as possible without cutting through it
   

STEP 3

1. Turn the square right side out using a turning tool to push out the corners as best as possible
   (I use a chopstick!)
   
2. Tucking the raw edge of the opening inside, iron flat
   

STEP 4

1. Top-stitch around the edge of the coaster using whichever stitch you like!

Here I got a chance to use my twin needle – this was my favorite!
