Getting Started

Do you want to try sewing, but don't have any idea of where to start? Hopefully these few guidelines will help.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:

A Sewing Machine
Borrow a sewing machine if you can, if not pick up a used one from craigslist or ebay. You can find one for $50 or less (you can always resell it to upgrade or just get rid of it).

Make sure you read the users manual for the machine - this will help you understand the basic functions of the machine.

A Pattern
Start with a simple pattern - About.com has a bunch of free patterns and tutorials (a pillow is a great beginner project)

Fabric & Thread
Choose a simple cotton blend fabric that doesn't have any straight lines or a design that will be difficult to match up at the seams. Solids and repeatative prints are the most "forgivable".

Don't spend a fortune on it your fabric, but make sure you pick something you really like. If you don't like the fabric, you won't like the final product!

Make sure to pick up coordinating All Purpose Thread (I use Dual Duty General Purpose by Coats and Clark). Don't use Dollar Store thread - it will break.

Notions
A decent pair of sewing scissors
A marking pencil or chalk
Pins
Ruler
Iron
A clear space to layout your fabric
Anything else required for the pattern (like batting if making a pillow)

OTHER TIPS:

Have patience - sewing takes time and practice. Don't get upset if it doesn't come out perfect the first time, I promise your project will come out better with each try.

If you get frustrated, walk away and come back to it later.

Don't take on projects that require advanced sewing techniques (zippers, clasps, bias tape, etc.)until you are ready for them.

Have fun!
