Well, here we are on Day 11 post Hurricane Sandy. This has been a difficult week and a
half to say the least.
We are still without power, however thankfully, our
electrician was able to hook our furnace up to our generator, so we are no
longer cold. We are still waiting
for PSE&G to restore our power.
Unfortunately we are among the few that have a “difficult localized
situation” that has not been a high priority for the company. You see, a huge tree fell on a house
trapping some live wires under it.
It also pulled 2-3 telephone poles down with it, so until the wires are
deemed “safe”, the tree cannot be removed. The wires cannot be repaired until the tree is removed. PSE&G needs to be there before that
can happen, and as you know PSE&G have had their hands full.
While we have been patient, knowing that there were many
others in worse situations, the inability to get a straight answer for when we
could possibly expect power has been trying to say the least. The Nor’easter that blew through
yesterday was of no help, leaving inches of snow behind and causing many more
power disruptions.
The one wonderful thing that happens when these storms hit
is that the community really pulls together. Amidst all the craziness, people all over have teamed up to
help those in need. Organized
drives, benefit concerts, shelters, and just pure humanity can bee seen
everywhere. Here in my town, the
owner of A Happy Stitch, Melissa, pulled
together a team of people to sew fleece hats for those who lost their
possessions. I was thrilled to be
a part of this group!
As for my immediate neighborhood, neighbors with power are
helping out neighbors without by running electrical cords across streets so
those of us without power can have some light at night.
The nights are super dark, and the hum of generators takes a
little getting used to. You can find generator after generator on the sides of
people’s homes.
The good news is that today we are seeing the first signs of
work being done. I am hopeful that
we may have our power back in the upcoming days.
I am so thankful to all my friends and neighbors who have
offered their help throughout the last week. And a special thank you to all of my customers who
have sent their kind words and well wishes and have been extremely patient knowing I
have not been able to fulfill orders.

I really hope everybody gets power soon since it's getting pretty cold.
ReplyDeleteThanks Norma, we all have our fingers crossed!
DeleteGosh, hope you get your power soon.. such a hard time for so many people
ReplyDeleteYou've captured a crazy time so well. The coming-together part was really heart-warming wasn't it. It isn't exactly electricity but it has a power all of its own. Thanks so much for your help making hats. I couldn't have done it without you!
