This year we made a last minute decision to take a road trip to Lancaster County for a few days to unwind. Camp is over and the kids had a little time before school, and hubby and I were in need of some down time. I managed to find a small carriage house for rent for a few days and we jumped on it.
One of the most noticeable things about Lancaster (aside from the Amish and Mennonite communities) is the expansive farmland. As far as your eye can see, there is green, rich, fertile lands that just speak to your inner soul.
As soon as we settled into our beautiful rental, a calmness took all of us over. There was no rush to go anywhere, no looking at clocks or watches, and just a content feeling of being part of this beautiful land.
The girls had a ball running around the fields that surrounded our cottage. I woke every morning and took a walk down by the small river that ran through the property to watch the sun rise. And we enjoyed our cup of coffee outside taking in the fresh air.
Every afternoon the resident dog, Liam greeted us at our front door which thrilled the girls to no end.
Of course we did a bit of the touristy stuff....we took a horse and buggy ride....
Visited a working Amish Farm....
Visited a Pretzel Factory and made our own pretzels....
The girls made dressed their own Amish dolls in a toy workshop....
And we spent a day at Dutch Wonderland Amusement Park.
I of course spent some time in some fabric and notion shops (which I will post about later), and let me tell you I saw some of the most gorgeous quilts around.
All in all, this last minute vacation was just what we all needed to bring our summer to a close.
