I have been wanting to make one of these since the summer, I just hadn't found the time, nor the right tutorial, and honestly didn't feel like thinking through the construction of this myself. But, today I was cruising the web and came across this great tutorial by Some of A Kind. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!
I wanted a trash bag that was sturdy and allowed for the use of a plastic insert. I also wanted an adjustable strap. Of course I wanted it to look nice. This fit the bill.
This project took about 45 minutes, although I'm sure now that I have one under my belt, I can cut that time by 15 minutes.
I did make a few tiny changes:
> I wanted the straps a bit closer together, so instead of 1" in from the edges, I put them 2".
> I did not use boning. I didn't have it on hand, but I did just get a package delivered that was held closed with this stiff plastic tie. It was a bit tough to sew through, but my denim needle did it and it worked like a charm. Yeah! Another thing to reuse/recycle!
I am so excited to NOT hear "Mommy, can you please take the garbage" while I am driving. This little bag is now directly in front of my 5 yr old's carseat. Yeah!!!!! It's the little things that make me happy!
I just featured your tutorial on my blog: http://koolbeenz-blog.blogspot.com/2011/06/fabric-car-trash-bags-with-tutorials.html
