With the colder weather settling in, it was time for my youngest daughter to get a cozy blanket to keep her warm. She has just about outgrown her toddler blankets, but isn't quite ready for a full twin sized one yet....so, I took the old throw from my couch and gave it a second life!
The throw was a warm heavy fleece, just about the perfect size for her, but it was a boring brown, and of course that just won't do for a little girl! I was inspired by this quilt from Paula Prass made with her Woodland Delight collection:
I just love the different sized blocks that she used and I of course love the fabric! While I don't have this collection on hand, I do have a few pieces which I used along with some other fabrics that I felt went well. Take a look!
I planned the block layout by using 1" squares of fabric (1" = 10"), I was able to play around with the colors, fabrics and block sizes until I found what I liked. While I'm not a quilter by any stretch of the imagination, I'm thrilled with how easy the large blocks were to put together and the final result. I didn't want to bother with creating a binding, so I simply put the assembled quilt blocks on top of the throw (right sides together) and sewed. I turned them right side out, ladder stitched the opening and finished the blanket with a 2" top stitch. This took me about 3 hours to make.
My daughter couldn't be happier. Of course now my older daughter wants one too...exactly the same of course....I'm currently hunting for another throw... Ha!
Oh, this is so lovely, and I like how you repurposed the throw. Lucky little gal! :)
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great! My 4 year old is hinting to me that she wants a big girl quilt to snuggle up w/around the house, maybe I'll give this a try!
