Spoonflower

spoonflowerHave you heard of it?  Have you tried it?  I absolutely love the idea of it!  Ok, if you haven’t heard of it, let me explain.  Spoonflower  is a company that allows you to print and sell your own fabric designs!  How very cool!  If you love sewing or fabric, and have a knack for design you really need to check it out.

Spoonflower is a pretty new company, started in 2008.  It was started by two guys and their wives who wanted to print their own fabric designs for curtains.  Now you can put your own ideas onto fabric too.  I personally don’t know too much about designing fabric (although I wish I did).  I know that designers use design software like Photoshop and Illustrator to do it.  But Spoonflower has posted this video on how to go about creating a design with just a scanner and some free editing software.  Take a look:

If you want to check out some of the very cool designs people have come up with, check out Spoonflower's shop here.  There are so many creative designs!  Here are a few that caught my eye:

Orange Lotusroot by Clearlytangled

So if you are feeling a bit creative and want to try your hand at designing, check it out.  You can order by the yard and even sell your design on their site for a 10% commission!  Even if you don’t want to design your own fabric, take a look at the unique designs created by others.  You can order fabrics in quilting cotton, knit, organic cotton, sateen, blends and even lawn cotton!

Kudos to Spoonflower for coming up with this unique business idea and giving everyday creative folks the opportunity to put their designs to print.
