Why I Chose the Pattern: I am always looking for cute, small projects to do to take a break from my work. I am a big fan of Amy Butler, and I actually was in need of something to hold my business cards so this was perfect!
Difficulty Level: Beginner/Intermediate. The sewing is easy, but I found the directions to be a bit cumbersome.
What I Loved: This pattern is free! You can download it here. I do love the look of it – it’s very hip.
What I Didn’t Love: As I mentioned the directions were a bit confusing. I also thought that the construction of the keeper was more difficult than it needed to be. It seemed to be a bit bulky by the time it was finished between the interfacing and stabilizer (and I didn’t even use Peltex as recommended, I used buckram which is not as thick).
I also found that the placement of my Velcro closure was off by about 1/2 inch which poses a problem when closing. I’m not sure why this happened.
Suggested Changes: I’m really not sure what to suggest. This pattern is what it is. I wish there weren’t so many “parts”.
Tips: Check and then double check your Velcro placement. Use a lightweight fusible interfacing to reduce bulk, and a very light stabilizer. As I mentioned, I used buckram which is typically used in hats.
Would I Recommend It? I’m on the fence here. Although I am not crazy about the pattern, it is cute and useful. It’s easy enough and uses only scrap fabric so you won’t be making a big investment, and after all the pattern is free. Go ahead and give it a try.
I'm trying to make that same card holder, but cant figure it out. I'm trying to make it without the lining and interfacing.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm....not quite sure what you will get without the lining, but the interfacing is what gives it the stiffness. I suppose once you put some cards in it it won't really matter. Let us know how it turns out! Good luck :)
