Why I chose this pattern: I'm sure you figured out that I like Amy Butler, and this Nappy Bag fits my love of large bags. I also have a friend who just had a baby and I thought this large bag would be a great gift.
Difficulty Level: Easy, I would recommend this bag to anyone. It wasn't difficult at all, and the directions were crystal clear.
What I Loved: The design of the bag is great, pockets galore! The construction was simple and didn't require much thought. An easy sew with great results.
What I Didn't Love: I think the straps are just a smidge too wide. I'd love to see them a bit skinnier. Also, the pattern calls for using a canvas as a stabilizer....I wasn't too sure I wanted to add the weight of the canvas (the bag requires quite a bit of fabric), so I opted to use fusible fleece on the interior and a lightweight interfacing on the exterior. Although I like the feel, I think the fusible fleece still added too much weight, and it did come out a bit thicker than I would have liked. Perhaps just a good interfacing would be fine. Maybe I'll try the canvas next time...
Suggested Changes: Most of the patterns I've done by Amy Butler don't include closures. I don't know why she has an aversion to them. This bag is so large and has such a wide opening, I'd highly recommend putting a magnetic snap in. One other change I made was to only create 2 pockets (instead of 3) on one of the sides on the interior. I like different size pockets and I thought the smaller ones that were recommended were a bit too small.
Would I Recommend It? Absolutely!

I'm getting ready to make this bag for myself :o) I'm pregnant with my first baby and absolutely loved the look of this bag. Thanks so much for your suggestions. It's nice hear from someone who has already made this before. I, too, will lose the cell phone pocket (because I think mine is too large any way) and will try to attempt the elastic pocket for bottles... I hope I can figure that one out :o)
ReplyDeleteYou will love the bag, it's so roomy! Congrats on the pregnancy :)
