Follow Along - Child Frog Slippers

I have a few new bag patterns that I've been wanting to make, but I have been patiently waiting for my shipment of interfacing and fleece before starting them. In the mean time, I've spent hours scouring the Internet for a free pattern or tutorial on slippers for my 3 yr. old. (After making booties for the baby, she has been wanting Mommy to sew her some slippers too). Let me tell you, there aren't a lot of tutorials or free patterns out there for cute kids slippers! I finally settled on this free pattern by p2 designs. They are called "Frog" Slippers, and they are easy enough that I thought I'd give them a whirl.

While the pattern is simple enough, I had a difficult sizing them properly since my daughters feet were too big for the child's sizes and too small for the adult ones. I finally got the right size by tracing my daughter's feet on a piece of paper and using the scaling option on my printing options to shrink the pattern for the adult size small and comparing them by placing the pattern and my drawn foot outline on top of one another holding them up to the light. After about 6 tries, I got the right size!

Sewing the slipper was very simple - it only took about 20 minutes per slipper. I used fleece for the exterior and interior and non-slip fabric for the bottom sole.

Since the pattern doesn't offer a tutorial, or many images, I thought I'd post a follow along for you. Please note: these are not detailed directions, you can get those from the pattern. This is simply a visual aid (along with a few notes) to help you follow the pattern.
STEP 1
1. Cut out all the pieces (I used the same fleece for both lining and exterior)
This picture only shoes the pieces for one slipper. You will notice that the pattern calls for you to cut the instep pieces on the fold of the fabric (creating one piece), however, I was using fabric scraps, so I cut separate pieces and sewed them together at the back.

STEP 2
1. Create the clip mark for the lining and exterior pieces using the pattern as a guide

2. Sew from the toe to the clip mark

STEP 3
1. Place the lining and outer fabric together (placing one inside the other) making sure that the right sides are together. (One piece will have the raw seams showing, while the other will not)

2. Sew from the clip mark around the throat of the slipper

3. Turn the slipper so the seams are between the layers

STEP 4
Baste the sole pieces together - you will baste the wrong sides together - you don't turn this piece!

STEP 5
1. Pin the sole to the instep - make sure that the bottom of your sole is facing the inside of the slipper - you will turn this right side out after stitching

2. Sew the pieces together

3. Zigzag around the seam to secure it, and trim away any excess fabric

STEP 6
1. Turn the slipper
2. Top-stitch around the neck for a more finished look
