WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Scrap Fabric
Quilt Block Pattern of your choice
Batting
Coordinating Button
Coordinating Thread
Hand Sewing Needle
STEP 1:
Find a quilt block that you love. Shrink it down to be anywhere from 2.5" - 5" depending on how large you want your pincushion.
STEP 2:
Cut your fabric and assemble your quilt block.
STEP 3:
Cut a piece of fabric for the back of the pin cushion that measures the same as the finished block.
Place the quilt block and backing right sides together.
Sew around the perimeter leaving a small opening (1"-2")
Turn & press
STEP 4
Fill with batting until firm
Slip stitch closed.
STEP 5
Add a button to the center top of the pincushion using a strong piece of upholstery thread, or doubled thread. Pull the thread all the way through to the back of the cushion to set the button into the cushion.
The designs I used were quite simple...the options are endless and the best part is that this little pincushion will sit by your machine and offer up a ton of inspiration every time you look at it. Hey - maybe it will even persuade you to actually commit to that quilt!
And, if you feel a little more motivated, go ahead and make a handful of blocks, then assemble them to make a pillow!
Go...indulge in your quilt blocks without the commitment!
Jennifer-I don't know a quilt block from a quilt round. Your quilt blocks look simple enough compared to the ones I googled. Do they have a name or a tutorial to make them? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteShelly, I used a very basic quilt block. The purple cushion used four 3" squares. The smaller blue/green cushion used the same 3" squares cut in half on the diagonal. I used a combo of quilting weight cotton and linen. Hope that helps! You may want to do a web search on "basic quilt block tutorial".
