The tutorial is a pdf download and comes from Ellen Baker from The Long Thread. While the tutorial is not image heavy (it actually just has a few drawn diagrams), it is quite easy to follow. The directions are clear and well written.
TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS
My only issue was that it was not clear which fabric was to be used for the lining and exterior. Ellen uses "Canvas" and "Cotton" in her supply list, then does not tell you which is which. The images on Sew Mama Sew show bags with the cotton as the exterior and the canvas as the lining - but the directions use the cotton as the lining and the canvas as the exterior. A bit confusing.....just know that the lining is longer and you'll be fine! I used a medium weight canvas for the lining and quilting cotton for the exterior (Woodcut Garden, Michael Miller).
I used insul-brite because I had it on hand, but it does make the bag a bit stiffer than if you were to use a cotton or bamboo batting.
The size is perfect for smaller children, and I wanted to personalize this by using a bit of reverse applique. I suppose if I did this over, I would make that applique a bit smaller.....but kids love their name on stuff, so this works.
I used a cord stop to keep the cord from getting pulled into the lining, but it is not necessary (you can just tie a knot)
This project from start to finish probably took about an hour. The use of webbing for the straps makes this a quick sew. Eliminate the personalization and you can do this in under an hour.
If you have or know kids, this is a great back-to-school gift!
good to know about the tutorial, thanks!
