They LOVE birthdays! So, to celebrate I decided to bake up a sweet treat worthy of a celebration. Forget clean eating, forget avoiding sugar, forget everything I base my food choices on - celebrations call for indulgence. And let me tell you, THIS, my friends, is the definition of indulgence!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uasoaU-RWlA/Uw3pnNGMb5I/AAAAAAAALKU/YVNLMSHRd7Q/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-36.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uasoaU-RWlA/Uw3pnNGMb5I/AAAAAAAALKU/YVNLMSHRd7Q/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-36.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Ok, it may just look like a gooey brownie, but I'll let you in a little secret....see those tiny eggs, those are my all time favorite candy of all time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-THQnlwxpcKc/Uw3qDCVBHbI/AAAAAAAALKc/dqOFJ85zezA/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-37.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-THQnlwxpcKc/Uw3qDCVBHbI/AAAAAAAALKc/dqOFJ85zezA/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-37.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These sweet, creamy, richly amazing chocolate morsels are (and have been since they were introduced) are my weakness. Do you know what they are?<br />
<br />
CADBURY MINI EGGS<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4rKARk6u8H8/Uw3rEzAL3WI/AAAAAAAALKo/4M_Qqsf4gNA/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-39.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4rKARk6u8H8/Uw3rEzAL3WI/AAAAAAAALKo/4M_Qqsf4gNA/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-39.jpg" height="320" width="210" /></a></div>
<br />
Thankfully they only come out for a few months every year around Easter, which probably adds to their deliciousness. And each year I allow myself to purchase ONE, yes, just ONE full size bag. Once that bag is gone, there is no more until the next year. Usually I will make this bag last a couple of months, savoring each tiny egg for everything it's worth.<br />
<br />
This year I decided to go crazy and use up about 1/3 of the bag to make these delectable brownies...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QWMQqRFGmWo/Uw3rZP0EHlI/AAAAAAAALKw/3A-aT2Evevg/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-32.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QWMQqRFGmWo/Uw3rZP0EHlI/AAAAAAAALKw/3A-aT2Evevg/s1600/Mini+Egg+Brownies-32.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These brownies were topped and baked with 1 cup of THIS:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aWbeetoQWnc/Uw3rnxqKKpI/AAAAAAAALK4/Cd0Vy8Pqea0/s1600/Mini+Eggs+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aWbeetoQWnc/Uw3rnxqKKpI/AAAAAAAALK4/Cd0Vy8Pqea0/s1600/Mini+Eggs+WM.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And let me tell you, it was heavenly. I have to admit this was the richest brownie I have ever eaten...so rich I couldn't even finish one (and that is truly rich).<br />
<br />
But I enjoyed every single bite and have frozen the batch in tiny squares for random treats when desperately needed.<br />
<br />
So, if you are looking for a decadent, rich, sweet, and indulgent dessert, and you are a Cadbury Mini Egg lover like me, you should give these a try.<br />
<br />
I found the recipe over at <a href="http://www.bakeaholicmama.com/2013/02/milk-chocolate-cadbury-mini-egg-brownies.html" target="_blank">Bakeaholic Mama</a>. Go on...you don't have much time before these eggs disappear from the shelves until 2015!<br />
<br />
Enjoy,<br />

The first snow storm was welcomed as it brought such beautiful whiteness with it. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PnunGTBgmO4/UwCm6IrqA3I/AAAAAAAALDs/cHdzqT144JM/s1600/Snow+Again-WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PnunGTBgmO4/UwCm6IrqA3I/AAAAAAAALDs/cHdzqT144JM/s1600/Snow+Again-WM.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The second storm, while just as pretty, started getting me a little stressed out since having the entire family home 24/7 was really messing with my work schedule....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qHFs3mQ9-jU/UwCnk11qZsI/AAAAAAAALEA/w-Tl4wcEG5I/s1600/Berries+SMALL+WM+s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qHFs3mQ9-jU/UwCnk11qZsI/AAAAAAAALEA/w-Tl4wcEG5I/s1600/Berries+SMALL+WM+s.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
The third snow storm, had my kids all giggly that they were able to enjoy ANOTHER day off from school and all the time to folly in the snow.... me, not so much... I was falling behind in work, had not been to the gym in days and was starting to go a little mad having my schedule flipped upside-down.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nHfuJJ-C2R4/UwCoI-FsW1I/AAAAAAAALEM/lX5FwSPyo8c/s1600/Sledding+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nHfuJJ-C2R4/UwCoI-FsW1I/AAAAAAAALEM/lX5FwSPyo8c/s1600/Sledding+WM.jpg" height="640" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
By the time the fourth snowstorm hit, along with blessing me with a nasty cold, I decided to just give in to whatever Mother Nature had to offer and make the best of it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-31_opvMfbeE/UwCpHP8pi3I/AAAAAAAALEk/kFPArVLfWv0/s1600/Playground+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-31_opvMfbeE/UwCpHP8pi3I/AAAAAAAALEk/kFPArVLfWv0/s1600/Playground+WM.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
Work just had to wait, and now that these two weeks are behind us, I realize that while I am a little behind in my work, it's not as horrible as I thought it would be....and I found that once you just accept what you cannot control, your stress kind of dissipates!<br />
<br />
Enjoy the snow!<br />

Do you need a Valentine's Day gift idea? I have a pattern for you that you are going to love...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RJTbWjHog-E/UufBKlIA-XI/AAAAAAAALC4/AlQBPrW2H08/s1600/Penguin-42-WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RJTbWjHog-E/UufBKlIA-XI/AAAAAAAALC4/AlQBPrW2H08/s1600/Penguin-42-WM.jpg" height="640" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
Can you stand these guys? Soft and cuddly, any penguin lover will appreciate this handmade gift oh so much.<br />
<br />
Valentine's day is 2 weeks away, and this little guy may just make that special someone smile a little brighter. <br />
<br />
I came up with the idea to make something penguin related for my 8 year old since she is studying penguins in school right now. I did a search on Google and came across this adorable pattern for Annie's Penguin by <a href="http://www.gingercake.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Gingercake</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.gingercake.bigcartel.com/product/annie-s-penguin-pillow-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://images.cdn.bigcartel.com/bigcartel/product_images/48889223/max_h-1000+max_w-1000/Penguin_title_page1000.jpg" height="640" width="492" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Needless to say I was thrilled when I saw that she was offering a sale on the pattern, and even more delighted when I found out she was offering a <a href="http://gingercake.typepad.com/gingercake/" target="_blank">Valentine's Day version</a> too! This version changes the belly to a heart and adds the option of a hat too!<br />
<br />
Gingercake offers the modification instructions on her blog <a href="http://gingercake.typepad.com/gingercake/" target="_blank">HERE</a>. And the pattern is on sale for $5.00 this week <a href="http://www.gingercake.bigcartel.com/product/annie-s-penguin-pillow-pdf-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">HERE</a>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UP4Ej8HSCYI/UufC9ztZQxI/AAAAAAAALDA/mhAkLz8H_zE/s1600/Penguin-35+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UP4Ej8HSCYI/UufC9ztZQxI/AAAAAAAALDA/mhAkLz8H_zE/s1600/Penguin-35+WM.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I made two of these guys - one for each of my daughters... they are going to squeal with delight when they wake up with these cuties in their bed Valentine's Day morning!<br />
<br />
But I digress...I know you want to hear about the pattern.....<br />
<br />
<b>WHAT I LOVED:</b><br />
Honestly, everything about this pattern was a joy. It was super easy - anyone that is comfortable with their sewing machine and zigzag stitches will enjoy this project. The directions are well written and the photos are great.<br />
<br />
These two guys were completed in a couple of hours. No stress, no frustration - just a pleasurable sew!<br />
<br />
<b>WHAT I DID'T LIKE:</b><br />
Nothing! Really - I was very pleased with this pattern purchase!<br />
<br />
<b>RECOMMENDATIONS:</b><br />
Gingercake recommends cotton for the main body and flannel for the belly. I went with minky for the belly because I find minky softer and just more "lovey" if that makes sense. Use whatever you like...but know there are options! I would recommend that you DO NOT make the main body in flannel though. Some flannels tend to fray more easily than others and with all that zig zagging, you may end up with a penguin who shreds apart with too much handling! <br />
<br />
If you choose to make the Valentine's Day version, make sure that you print the pdf correctly... no matter what I tried, mine came out smaller than the original version, and since I wanted a larger penguin I finally decided to make the modification myself. It was easy enough to do, but just be aware that the Valentine's Day version may print out a tad smaller than the regular version.<br />
<br />
I also chose to use buttons for the eyes. I think it gives the penguins a bit more dimension - but I have older kids, if you are giving this to someone under the age of 4, you will probably want to stick with appliqué eyes.<br />
<br />
I wish I had the time to make the hat...I just don't have the luxury of time these days, but maybe I'll get to it before Valentine's day...we'll see....but if you have the time, why not add it on? It's so cute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--jo7g0N9VFM/UufC-HpcEII/AAAAAAAALDE/2viksXAGBYM/s1600/Penguin-36+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--jo7g0N9VFM/UufC-HpcEII/AAAAAAAALDE/2viksXAGBYM/s1600/Penguin-36+WM.jpg" height="640" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
Ok...have I said enough? You have two weeks to get your sew on! Go!<br />
<br />

It's a healthy take on fueling your body....and an awesome way to lose a few pounds without really trying! <br>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://thefithousewife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/eat-real-food.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://thefithousewife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/eat-real-food.jpg" height="313" width="320"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image from "The Fit Housewife"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I've been doing this for 3 weeks and the benefits are undeniable...<br>
<ul>
<li>I have more energy</li>
<li>My salt and sweet cravings are pretty much G.O.N.E</li>
<li>I have eliminated refined sugar from my diet without challenge</li>
<li>I have eliminated 90% of dairy from my diet without challenge (I still enjoy Greek Yogurt & a sprinkle of cheese every now and then)</li>
<li>I have banished my caffeine addiction - seriously...I haven't had coffee in 2 weeks and haven't missed it! (This is HUGE)</li>
<li>I have lost 9.5 pounds!</li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4gsYPWQXbIs/Ut0hmWDjwEI/AAAAAAAALBE/VBiccXduDBo/s1600/Title+Picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4gsYPWQXbIs/Ut0hmWDjwEI/AAAAAAAALBE/VBiccXduDBo/s1600/Title+Picture.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my friends asked for some help with her coat. She's had it a number of years and the elastic that held the buttons in place was all stretched out.....See? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSJOcM3DNhU/UtrwePBm-gI/AAAAAAAAK_Q/_NOzCusZjjI/s1600/Coat+Buttons-33-Edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZSJOcM3DNhU/UtrwePBm-gI/AAAAAAAAK_Q/_NOzCusZjjI/s1600/Coat+Buttons-33-Edit.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It didn't hold the coat closed well, and made this otherwise perfect coat look a bit "worn" and droopy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UEXER2TP7d8/UtrwatTDKPI/AAAAAAAAK_M/RcSAX6dhWyA/s1600/Coat+Buttons-30-Edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UEXER2TP7d8/UtrwatTDKPI/AAAAAAAAK_M/RcSAX6dhWyA/s1600/Coat+Buttons-30-Edit.jpg" height="640" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
Something like this is quite an easy fix. Simply replace the worn elastic with BUTTONHOLES!<br />
<br />
Your machine probably came with one of these bad boys.... It's a buttonholer. It is your friend in a situation like this....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lSCppaLtbSg/UtrxzhGhEFI/AAAAAAAAK_k/Ry84S5nero4/s1600/Coat+Buttons-35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lSCppaLtbSg/UtrxzhGhEFI/AAAAAAAAK_k/Ry84S5nero4/s1600/Coat+Buttons-35.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It actually serves two purposes. <br />
<b>1)</b> It measures the button to give you the perfect size buttonhole. Simply place your button in the two clamps at the back of the foot. Typically you would leave the button in there to ensure it doesn't change sizes on you, but in this case I didn't want to remove the button from the coat so I did my best to gently remove it and not jostle the foot at all.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wnO8Ap4Wq50/Utrxzoz6HtI/AAAAAAAAK_o/5xb_H9xGkbU/s1600/Coat+Buttons-36.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wnO8Ap4Wq50/Utrxzoz6HtI/AAAAAAAAK_o/5xb_H9xGkbU/s1600/Coat+Buttons-36.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>2)</b> The buttonhole foot makes a perfectly shaped and sized buttonhole! Simply attach the foot to your machine, set your machine to the correct buttonhole setting and pull that little sensor lever that is on the underside of your machine down. It should gently touch the front "tab" of the button hole foot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f1bhvE0AeQQ/Utryy5lS1LI/AAAAAAAAK_0/FYbEka-muhE/s1600/Coat+Buttons-37-Edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f1bhvE0AeQQ/Utryy5lS1LI/AAAAAAAAK_0/FYbEka-muhE/s1600/Coat+Buttons-37-Edit.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
Before you attempt making buttonholes on coats, give it a whirl on some scrap fabric to get a feel for how it works. When the machine is doing it's magic, you need to be very careful not to touch, tap or breath (kidding) on that sensor - it can mess up your buttonhole!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lzq9BGyXpJI/Utry9iKx-wI/AAAAAAAAK_8/CFZOkORKRM0/s1600/Coat+Buttons-38.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lzq9BGyXpJI/Utry9iKx-wI/AAAAAAAAK_8/CFZOkORKRM0/s1600/Coat+Buttons-38.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you get the hang of it, just double check to make sure your buttonhole fits your button well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ilMabwHUTdY/UtrzVsGI74I/AAAAAAAALAE/fzbCWnjUJCQ/s1600/Coat+Buttons-39.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ilMabwHUTdY/UtrzVsGI74I/AAAAAAAALAE/fzbCWnjUJCQ/s1600/Coat+Buttons-39.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Great! Now you are ready to work on the coat.<br />
Start by laying your coat flat and pin if needed to hold layers in place. Measure in 1/2" from the edge of the coat and mark where your buttonhole will go. Remember, buttonholes should be placed horizontally. While your buttonhole will do the measuring, I like to mark the coat anyway so I can eye if something goes awry. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lz7ZO4Fv-xc/Utrzr6oZPaI/AAAAAAAALAM/5BTxTNfWto8/s1600/Coat+Buttons-42-Edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lz7ZO4Fv-xc/Utrzr6oZPaI/AAAAAAAALAM/5BTxTNfWto8/s1600/Coat+Buttons-42-Edit.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Go ahead and make your buttonhole. When finished, it should look like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QMsJp5e0T_I/Utr0HlvilmI/AAAAAAAALAU/VojA2wjtV_s/s1600/Coat+Buttons-43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QMsJp5e0T_I/Utr0HlvilmI/AAAAAAAALAU/VojA2wjtV_s/s1600/Coat+Buttons-43.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Clip off any loose threads and use your seam ripper to open up the hole.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I31BL6YDfXQ/Utr0QExYkYI/AAAAAAAALAc/JSl-L6zPc4I/s1600/Coat+Buttons-44.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I31BL6YDfXQ/Utr0QExYkYI/AAAAAAAALAc/JSl-L6zPc4I/s1600/Coat+Buttons-44.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You may not need to do this, but I then was ready to clip off those worn and loose elastic loops! See ya later!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2BJvlybT-2I/Utr0WQ2TEYI/AAAAAAAALAk/sr2UbI9sV3I/s1600/Coat+Buttons-45.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2BJvlybT-2I/Utr0WQ2TEYI/AAAAAAAALAk/sr2UbI9sV3I/s1600/Coat+Buttons-45.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And now that coat looks as good as new!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kzAGfOQKUQI/Utr0WYoiFQI/AAAAAAAALAs/4iKzMGqcd58/s1600/Coat+Buttons-46.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kzAGfOQKUQI/Utr0WYoiFQI/AAAAAAAALAs/4iKzMGqcd58/s1600/Coat+Buttons-46.jpg" height="640" width="422" /></a></div>
Sweet!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BHM8weM-ioE/Utr0WpIi8iI/AAAAAAAALAo/zlQ3zxR7G58/s1600/Coat+Buttons-49.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BHM8weM-ioE/Utr0WpIi8iI/AAAAAAAALAo/zlQ3zxR7G58/s1600/Coat+Buttons-49.jpg" height="422" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Happy Buttonholing!<br />

Why? As part of moving forward in 2014 I am making a commitment to myself and my family to "disconnect" from the online world a little more and engage in real life. Not that I don't do that already, I do, but if I'm honest with myself, I don't do it enough. <br />
<br />
<b>The Challenges of Social Media & Business</b><br />
It is so easy to get caught up in real time news, events and goings on in the lives of other people. The internet, social media, smart phones and tablets make it so easy to disengage from your personal here and now and escape into everyone else's. To a fault really. Then add in owning your own ONLINE based business and life becomes even more complex. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://socialmediaimpact.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/looking-bad-feature-540x264-social-media.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://socialmediaimpact.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/looking-bad-feature-540x264-social-media.jpg" height="312" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image from http://socialmediaimpact.com/</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I literally spend 6 hours a day in my basement studio...alone. My only interaction with the world during that time is through typed words on a computer screen. While it is the basis of my business and I am so very grateful for it, it has its drawbacks. I really miss interacting with people face to face! I miss talking! I think I am losing brain cells because of it. While I have no problem putting words together for an email, blog post or something else, my "think on your feet" verbal skills have diminished. I sometimes listen to myself talk and think..."wow, that didn't come out right...or I could've said that better." I'm out of practice!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://blog.iese.edu/expatriatus/files/2011/10/worklife.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://blog.iese.edu/expatriatus/files/2011/10/worklife.jpg" height="287" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image from "Expatriatus"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The other problem with working from home is the inability to separate home life from work life. My work computer is my personal computer. My work phone is my personal phone. I can't check my personal email without checking my business email...and when I have business email I have a need to answer any questions right away despite what I am doing (i.e. playing with my kids). Terrible, right?<br />
<br />
<b>To Grow or Not to Grow?</b><br />My other problem is that I am constantly trying to keep up with my workload. While this is good, it doesn't allow me time to analyze and think about my business. I am in a good place right now...is this where I want to stay? Or do I want to grow Sewplicity? If so, how will I grow it and what will it take to do that? These are all questions I need to explore...in depth, and I just can't while I'm so busy filling orders and blogging!<br />
<br />
<b>Health & Fitness</b><br />
On another front, I am taking 2014 to jump into clean eating. Over the past 2 years my family has been on this path and have eliminated most of the processed food we eat. For me, however, it is not enough to be "almost" there. You see, the other pitfall of working in my basement by myself 6 hours a day is that I don't move too much. Sure, I make time to work out during the week, but it just isn't enough to counteract sitting for those 6 hours/day. When I worked outside the home I would walk a lot more. There is no walking when you work where you live! I've managed to put on about 15 pounds since starting my business and I am not at all happy about it. Now add to that a herniated disc which flares up every few months...this makes my life painfully difficult. I need to pull those 15 pounds off - for my self esteem and my back. So I am not only eliminating all processed food but I am making a dedicated effort to cut out 90% of dairy and refined sugar from my diet and increase my workouts. The dedication to eating clean means spending more time in the kitchen preparing and cooking meals. More time shopping for healthy foods. Just more time and attention overall. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-40jo0lPQOIE/Uad1rg4I5dI/AAAAAAAAJqA/8x-Z0Mo1CMU/s400/Raspberry+Lemonade-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-40jo0lPQOIE/Uad1rg4I5dI/AAAAAAAAJqA/8x-Z0Mo1CMU/s400/Raspberry+Lemonade-3.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>What Does This All Mean? </b><br />It means that I am re-organizing my life and my time. I am dedicating a bit less to work and a bit more to family, health and life. I want and need to enjoy this a bit more...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YBvi6SB2oH8/Us6_caybGOI/AAAAAAAAK90/vIWMs0DAxoM/s1600/untitled-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YBvi6SB2oH8/Us6_caybGOI/AAAAAAAAK90/vIWMs0DAxoM/s1600/untitled-6.jpg" height="320" width="256" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iwek_GL7964/Us6_TWsSXLI/AAAAAAAAK9s/v85vvhPtL5Y/s1600/untitled-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iwek_GL7964/Us6_TWsSXLI/AAAAAAAAK9s/v85vvhPtL5Y/s1600/untitled-3.jpg" height="320" width="211" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Moving Forward</b><br />
Don't worry, I promise I will still be sewing away and making high chair covers for all you discerning Mammas... I will just be doing it at a little slower pace to allow my personal life needs to be met. And for all my blog followers, I will still have plenty of fun sewing tutorials, reviews and ideas for you. I'll warn you that there may be a few more posts about food and healthy eating intertwined and the posts may not be as frequent, but hey...this blog was never meant to be ONLY about sewing. I've always intended it to be about "life as a crafter, small business owner and stay at home Mom". It's time to get real about life.<br />
<br />
How are you jumping into 2014? What changes are you making? I'd love to hear from you!<br />

To kick off 2014, I give you this quote to ponder....<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">“In this new year, may you have a deep understanding of your true value and worth, an absolute faith in your unlimited potential, peace of mind in the midst of uncertainty, the confidence to let go when you need to, acceptance to replace your resistance, gratitude to open your heart, the strength to meet your challenges, great love to replace your fear, forgiveness and compassion for those who offend you, clear sight to see your best and true path, hope to dispel obscurity, the conviction to make your dreams come true, meaningful and rewarding synchronicities, dear friends who truly know and love you, a childlike trust in the benevolence of the universe, the humility to remain teachable, the wisdom to fully embrace your life exactly as it is, the understanding that every soul has its own course to follow, the discernment to recognize your own unique inner voice of truth, and the courage to learn to be still.”</span> <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--V-HZnr8M7I/Ur6pDQF5fxI/AAAAAAAAK8I/-KXB_tY9pfc/s1600/untitled-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--V-HZnr8M7I/Ur6pDQF5fxI/AAAAAAAAK8I/-KXB_tY9pfc/s640/untitled-2.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
Since backpacks (especially owl backpacks) are not my "thing", I hunted the web for a tutorial or pattern. When I came across <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/owl-backpack/26423" target="_blank">this </a>pattern from <a href="http://thesewingloftblog.com/" target="_blank">The Sewing Loft,</a> I new I had found a winner.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/owl-backpack/26423" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://img1.etsystatic.com/001/0/5363735/il_570xN.366732481_1ppu.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>WHAT I LOVED:</b><br />
The pattern was well written and easy to follow. There were plenty of pictures to demonstrate the steps. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XI9DL2cUlFo/Ur6rHd8MfUI/AAAAAAAAK8c/yArfukpstsw/s1600/untitled-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XI9DL2cUlFo/Ur6rHd8MfUI/AAAAAAAAK8c/yArfukpstsw/s640/untitled-5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE:</b><br />
My only criticism of this pattern was the file size was HUGE! I have a decent computer and scrolling through this pdf was somewhat torturous - I'm not sure if the images weren't compressed properly, but it was very frustrating to wait for the pictures to load and move between pages. If you have an older computer you may find this even more annoying....Of course you can always print it out, but I hate wasting paper! <br />
<br />
<b>SUGGESTED MODIFICATIONS:</b><br />
The only modification I would recommend is to lengthen the straps by a few inches. I think this pattern was made for a toddler, although the bag itself is quite large. I made it for a 7yr old so I added a few inches and I'm so glad I did. Even better, if you can, take the time to make adjustable straps!<br />
<br />
Remember that you don't have to rely on the pattern for the belly. Have fun with it! I choose to make little feather flaps which added a unique aspect to my version of the bag.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xX2qaL50poY/Ur6rCmk_WdI/AAAAAAAAK8U/CWnMKYLZOAk/s1600/untitled-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xX2qaL50poY/Ur6rCmk_WdI/AAAAAAAAK8U/CWnMKYLZOAk/s640/untitled-1.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y8RH8pJRQ6I/Ur6rT4C3ERI/AAAAAAAAK8k/Ylmmu00xet4/s1600/untitled-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Y8RH8pJRQ6I/Ur6rT4C3ERI/AAAAAAAAK8k/Ylmmu00xet4/s640/untitled-6.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PATTERN?</b><br />
Yes!!! If you know an owl lover, this backpack is just adorable and sews up pretty quickly. The well-written instructions are wonderful and the images are helpful. As long as you are familiar with reading sewing instructions you can take this on! It is well worth the price of $8.50.<br />
<br />
You can get the pattern through <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/owl-backpack/26423" target="_blank">Craftsy</a> or <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/107155041/owl-backpack-pattern-instant-download?ref=sr_gallery_21&ga_search_query=owl+backpack&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all" target="_blank">Etsy</a>.<br />

<br>
First, let me tell you our house is old...not old meaning 50 years...more like OLD meaning closer to 100 years. Let's put it this way, when we had our kitchen remodeled about 9 years ago we uncovered a gas line in the ceiling that was used for light at one time. Yeah, that kind of old. <br><br>Needless to say, we have to choose our remodeling projects very carefully because when we decide to rip a room apart it uncovers all kinds of other wonderful projects that often double or triple our initial budget. Ugh.<br>
<br>
But I sooooo wanted to remodel our bathroom...you see, it's got these "wonderful" paneled tiles on the wall...yeah...paneled (and painted)...oh, and bumpy plaster walls! The paint colors were chosen years ago with whatever paint was left over in the basement. Kind of dreary and not really coordinated. Not quite my style.<br>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oPL0osbYpt4/UouHgWNUuAI/AAAAAAAAKx0/1qph-EQDHps/s1600/before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oPL0osbYpt4/UouHgWNUuAI/AAAAAAAAKx0/1qph-EQDHps/s640/before.jpg" width="640"></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I wish I had a better before picture, but the photos were an afterthought!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I've patiently waited for the day we would get to remodel. Unfortunately this year was not going to be the year - we're headed off to Disney instead...and next year we'd like to put in a patio...so it looks like my dream bathroom is still a few years off, so when my hubby suggested we re-paint I jumped at the opportunity for the small change. Little did I realize how much a simple coat of paint can change things.<br>
<br>
<b>Ready for the transformation? </b><br>

You know the $1-$2 ones that you assume are for painters, screen printers and embroiderers? As an avid sewer, you really have no use for those....besides, you can up a tote so much nicer anyway, right? <br>
<br>
Well, I want to let you in on a little secret. If you can score some of those on the super cheap, you may not want to pass them up so quickly. With a few fabric scraps and a little time, you can transform those cheapo totes into something super chic and save your prized fabric stash and valuable time for another project...<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jpo-dULVYIE/UoPGk2RBoqI/AAAAAAAAKvc/Ot8BQvatYF4/s1600/Cover+Photo+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jpo-dULVYIE/UoPGk2RBoqI/AAAAAAAAKvc/Ot8BQvatYF4/s640/Cover+Photo+WM.jpg" width="512"></a></div>
<br>
Nice, aren't they? These awesome totes started out as the most boring burlap bags EVER! I paid under $1.00 for each of them. I spent maybe $3.00 more for the fabric to line them. So for a grand total of $4.00 along with 30 minutes of my time I have turned a nothing bag into a great gift item. Do you want to know how I did it?<br>

I'll be honest, I've been in a bit of a sewing slump the last week or so. Does that ever happen to you? It's very frustrating - especially when I make a living from it, but I suppose that is also why I have fallen off track too. As much as I LOVE sewing, when it is your JOB, it can get a little mundane every now and again. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So...what do I do when I have one of these slumps? I take a tiny break and find my creative energy elsewhere. For me, that usually is photography. If you weren't aware, I am an avid photographer. I picked it up because of my sewing business and just can't get enough! If interested, you can visit my photography website <a href="http://fotoplicity.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">HERE</a>. If interested in my florals, do visit my Etsy Shop <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/Fotoplicity?ref=search_shop_redirect" target="_blank">HERE</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So...remember that awesome vintage suitcase I received a few weeks ago? Not only was the wonderful fabric an inspiration for sewing, but the suitcase itself inspired me to plan a vintage photo shoot with my girls! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PXmRe9K9kcE/Un5j7veOE3I/AAAAAAAAKuc/VrFE-kk9Gsk/s1600/Vintage-86-SMALL+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PXmRe9K9kcE/Un5j7veOE3I/AAAAAAAAKuc/VrFE-kk9Gsk/s640/Vintage-86-SMALL+WM.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thankfully I have two willing daughters who enjoy my click-happy hobby as well. They aren't always cooperative, but I have to say, even they enjoyed this little step back in history and role-played the entire time!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I scored both of these coats on eBay for around $20.00 each. Both coats were in perfect condition and just right for my vintage shoot! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HS8lylWGDLQ/Un5lIGii8xI/AAAAAAAAKuo/KM79e9gamYE/s1600/Vintage-45-Edit+BW2+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HS8lylWGDLQ/Un5lIGii8xI/AAAAAAAAKuo/KM79e9gamYE/s640/Vintage-45-Edit+BW2+WM.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And how awesome is that suitcase? The perfect prop for this shot, don't you think?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fPYV5KOG5Fw/Un5lyRr9FMI/AAAAAAAAKvA/Ql1KuJ1HpqM/s1600/Vintage-61+BW+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fPYV5KOG5Fw/Un5lyRr9FMI/AAAAAAAAKvA/Ql1KuJ1HpqM/s640/Vintage-61+BW+WM.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh, and are you wondering about those adorable hats? These came from the amazing Etsy seller, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/PumpkinPieCreations" target="_blank">Pumpkin Pie Creations</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uzrjRB8G2xw/Un5lnRmhWCI/AAAAAAAAKu0/kwmFfnLB9Q8/s1600/Vintage-111-WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uzrjRB8G2xw/Un5lnRmhWCI/AAAAAAAAKu0/kwmFfnLB9Q8/s640/Vintage-111-WM.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I asked her to make me matching hats for the girls with coordinating colors. They are so gorgeous...if you are in need of a winter hat, you should stop by her shop. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-82mph1fXCo0/Un5lnP65PJI/AAAAAAAAKuw/HltprnYndJQ/s1600/Vintage-144-SMALL+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-82mph1fXCo0/Un5lnP65PJI/AAAAAAAAKuw/HltprnYndJQ/s640/Vintage-144-SMALL+WM.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here is one more with the suitcase that inspired this entire shoot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0E6OdAIQj0s/Un5mrFPnXgI/AAAAAAAAKvM/e6OmXY7IhiQ/s1600/Vintage-71-SMALL+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0E6OdAIQj0s/Un5mrFPnXgI/AAAAAAAAKvM/e6OmXY7IhiQ/s640/Vintage-71-SMALL+WM.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So that's my photography fix for the week...I promise to get back on the sewing horse soon. I have a few tutorials planned as well as some needle and thread inspiration for you all.</div>

Trading Sweets for Life Lessons.Halloween was a lot of fun this year. My girls are both old enough to do thoroughly enjoy the holiday.<br />
<br />
This year both of my girls wanted "store-bought" costumes. Mixed feelings on that one...while I welcomed not having to slave over detailed handmade costumes this year, part of me felt a bit sad about not making them. Anyway, this year we ended up with the Vampire and the Princess...two polar opposites!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X5yLjZXLRgg/UnZZOluCmYI/AAAAAAAAKtw/bKLQv2AnsDQ/s1600/Costumes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X5yLjZXLRgg/UnZZOluCmYI/AAAAAAAAKtw/bKLQv2AnsDQ/s640/Costumes.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After the school parades and festivities, we attended a super fun party with friends and then headed out for some traditional trick-or-treating.<br />
<br />
We spent a good 2 hours roaming (more like running) through our neighborhood for holiday treats. By the end of the evening we came home with a ton of loot!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3q_Xy9eKSUA/UnZZ8Zyu8gI/AAAAAAAAKt4/o2QCp9bdDQQ/s1600/candy+donation-30+WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3q_Xy9eKSUA/UnZZ8Zyu8gI/AAAAAAAAKt4/o2QCp9bdDQQ/s640/candy+donation-30+WM.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Whoa! That's A LOT of candy! Over 5 pounds to be exact! Both of my girls enjoyed 2 pieces of their choice that evening and one piece the following day. But if you have been following me for long, you know that I am a huge advocate of eating healthy, organic, non-GMO foods. Add to that my youngest daughters allergies to soy and you can figure out that having all of this candy <i>(or even a portion of it)</i> in my house is not typical, nor desired. <br />
<br />
So...I was trying to think of a way to rid my home of the sweets. I came across the "Switch Witch" idea - which is really cute, but having never shared the idea before, I didn't think it would work...especially for my older daughter. So I decided to come up with my own version.<br />
<br />
CASH FOR CANDY<br />
Three days after Halloween, after the novelty and excitement of the holiday has worn off, I offered the girls a "deal". Cash for Candy. If they gave me ALL of their Halloween candy, I would pay them $25. If they gave me half of their candy, I would give them $10. They could use the cash to buy themselves something, or could bank it. Of course they could bypass the entire deal and just keep the candy if they wanted...<br />
<br />
My youngest daughter's eyes lit up immediately. I barely finished explaining the deal to them when she jumped up, ran to get her bag of candy and deposited on my lap. "I'll take the $25!" she yelled. When can we go to Toys R Us? Score!<br />
<br />
My older daughter had a more difficult time. She wasn't so eager to part with all that sweetness....She tried negotiating, "How about $1 per piece?" or "What will you give me for 10 pieces of candy instead?" I explained that there was no negotiating. The deal was the deal. Decide.<br />
<br />
After much internal debate, she too handed over her entire bag of candy! Woo hoo! Mom gets rid of every last candy bar without one tear! Granted, I made the deal pretty sweet...it's costing me $50 and a trip to Toys R Us. But I choose $25 because I knew that the majority of the things they would want would be around the $20 price point <i>(and because we discuss prices when shopping, so did they!)</i> $25 made the deal enticing. On a side note, neither of my girls get an allowance for their chores<i> (we consider it plain old responsibility around here) </i>so this was a chance for them to "earn" some money which they don't have many opportunities to do.<br />
<br />
So what to do with 5 pounds of candy? Well, throwing it away is just wasteful, so that wasn't an option. I hunted around the internet and found <a href="http://operationshoebox.com/programs/candy-donations/" target="_blank">Operation Shoebox</a>. Operation Shoebox is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to show our troops deployed outside the USA that we care by sending packages, letters, and bulk items to them during their deployment. 100% of the donations they receive go to our troops. <br />
<br />
PERFECT!<br />
So our candy is packaged up and ready to ship out tomorrow morning! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G8wB3TfSLcY/UnZegLOb0DI/AAAAAAAAKuE/zy3Yz8nGEas/s1600/candy+donation-33-WM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G8wB3TfSLcY/UnZegLOb0DI/AAAAAAAAKuE/zy3Yz8nGEas/s640/candy+donation-33-WM.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Not only do did our kids give up their unhealthy snacks, they practiced the art of negotiation, practiced decision making skills, will get a math lesson at the toy store and doing a good deed by donating to a worthy cause. <br />
<br />
Awesome! <br />

Vintage Goodness...This past weekend I was visiting my in-laws and my mother-in-law surprised me with an amazing gift. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MTuPNGpIrpM/UnEABbXHGMI/AAAAAAAAKsE/4zSly2P2GWI/s1600/untitled-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="263" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MTuPNGpIrpM/UnEABbXHGMI/AAAAAAAAKsE/4zSly2P2GWI/s400/untitled-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The second I saw this gorgeous vintage suitcase I was jumping for joy....seriously, how could one NOT be? This suitcase has many a story to tell to be sure....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iInLMVm7bZ8/UnEAY-zeaUI/AAAAAAAAKsM/nDm7sOPFJGQ/s1600/untitled-11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iInLMVm7bZ8/UnEAY-zeaUI/AAAAAAAAKsM/nDm7sOPFJGQ/s640/untitled-11.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
It's beautifully worn and rusted...and do you see that beautiful stitching? I mean...just gorgeous!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6nbrxMXyyuE/UnEAofCL2MI/AAAAAAAAKsU/Is5qcc5nDew/s1600/untitled-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6nbrxMXyyuE/UnEAofCL2MI/AAAAAAAAKsU/Is5qcc5nDew/s640/untitled-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
But the best was yet to come....take a look at the treasures inside....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SGOIoodQkCs/UnEAzkPTiiI/AAAAAAAAKsc/zwDe8Z8WdMA/s1600/untitled-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SGOIoodQkCs/UnEAzkPTiiI/AAAAAAAAKsc/zwDe8Z8WdMA/s640/untitled-3.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
Oh yes...fabric! But not just any old fabric. Old fabric, curtains and sheets which have been hidden away for many years. <br />
Let's take a closer look, shall we?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh so pretty curtains that hung in a kitchen oh so long ago...I can picture a sunny warm day with the light filtering through these through an open window...can you?<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hlzzYC04Ddg/UnEBPeVK3YI/AAAAAAAAKsk/fk-8of1dEak/s1600/untitled-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hlzzYC04Ddg/UnEBPeVK3YI/AAAAAAAAKsk/fk-8of1dEak/s640/untitled-4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And this nautical print, at least a yard, with such detail to be found within every inch. The colors still bright throughout the print even though the yellow edges give a hint to its age.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4FqCkuuRjlg/UnEBibWSXiI/AAAAAAAAKss/WGCF7ovZO08/s1600/untitled-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4FqCkuuRjlg/UnEBibWSXiI/AAAAAAAAKss/WGCF7ovZO08/s640/untitled-5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And if that isn't enough, take a look at this fun winter print. There are at least two yards of this fabric...it is just screaming to be made into something for the upcoming holidays! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mkvBKQ6EhT0/UnECQIlPLXI/AAAAAAAAKs0/PMgUATNyDCM/s1600/untitled-8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mkvBKQ6EhT0/UnECQIlPLXI/AAAAAAAAKs0/PMgUATNyDCM/s640/untitled-8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And check this out...wagons, plows and eagles...red, white and blue taking front and center in this print.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xMhYM53vrdk/UnECjvIPdxI/AAAAAAAAKs8/BEq72w-YTVY/s1600/untitled-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xMhYM53vrdk/UnECjvIPdxI/AAAAAAAAKs8/BEq72w-YTVY/s640/untitled-6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Can you stand it? I sure can't. I know, typically you will not find these types of prints featured on my blog...I'm more of a bright color, modern type of girl, but how can one not just go crazy over a score like this. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E7ei3bym5u0/UnEDEAwP-EI/AAAAAAAAKtE/jy6p5UjxPzs/s1600/untitled-10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E7ei3bym5u0/UnEDEAwP-EI/AAAAAAAAKtE/jy6p5UjxPzs/s640/untitled-10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So onto the big question...what do I make out of this? It needs to be something that does this fabric the justice it so deserves and has been waiting oh so long for!<br />
<br />
Suggestions welcome! <br />

Silly question - I know! Sure they do. And if you like a clean car like I do, this probably drives you crazy!<br>
<br>
About a year ago I had purchased several different products that were made to protect the back of the seats...none of which fit properly and really didn't fit my needs - so if you remember, I made my own. You can see that post <a href="http://sewplicity.blogspot.com/2012/10/kid-proof-your-car-seats-seat-back.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rBvaAyFD9Bc/UHRiU8_gWUI/AAAAAAAAIhs/qB_V7GO4qHQ/s640/seat+back+cover2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rBvaAyFD9Bc/UHRiU8_gWUI/AAAAAAAAIhs/qB_V7GO4qHQ/s400/seat+back+cover2.jpg" width="300"></a></div>
Well, let me tell you, these have been AWESOME! But after a year they have worn themselves out. After many washings the elastic has become weak and the fabric won't come clean from shoe dirt abuse <i>(which I am happy was not on my seats)</i>! So I decided to make some new ones with a few modifications to make these protectors even better. <br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NPoW1lBulGc/UmUzYzAHHAI/AAAAAAAAKrM/ujMisrMbAis/s1600/Seat+Protector-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NPoW1lBulGc/UmUzYzAHHAI/AAAAAAAAKrM/ujMisrMbAis/s640/Seat+Protector-5.jpg" width="482"></a></div>
<br>
This time around I used a heavier duck cotton <i>(canvas)</i> to prolong their life. I also added a heavy-weight interfacing to the back main panel to add a bit more structure. I modified the shape a tiny bit and added a 4" wide strip of Sew-In Peltex along the very top to keep the fabric from drooping along the top and withstand the headrest holes better. Finally, I separated the top pocket into two because it always hung open given the wide width.<br>
<br>
While remaking them, I took some photos and drew up some diagrams so you can replicate these for your car. These are made to fit a 2009 Acura MDX, but they should work for most cars if you take measurements and modify as needed!<br>
<br>
<b>What You Will Need:</b><br><i>This makes ONE (1) seat protector. Double for 2.</i><br>
<br>
<ul>
<li>1.5 Yards Fabric. I used Duck Canvas, but any cotton or even laminate would work well </li>
<li>1 Yard Fusible Heavy Weight Interfacing</li>
<li>1 Piece 15" x 4" Firm Sew-In Peltex</li>
<li>1 26" Piece of 1/4" Elastic</li>
<li>1 26" Piece of 1/2" Elastic </li>
<ul>
<li><i>NOTE: Depending on the shape of your seat you may need to modify the length of elastic you need!</i></li>
</ul>
</ul>

I fix problems quickly, have an easy return or exchange policy and spend a lot of time listening to my customers. For small business owners, each and every sale is important to our bottom line. It can be detrimental to our business if we have to issue refund after refund. I'm proud to say that the percentage of returns I get are only about 1%. A number I work really, really hard for.<br>
<div>
<br>
That said, there are times when the best customer service you can provide should be to quickly and swiftly end the customer/seller relationship, issue a return if a purchase was made and guide that customer to purchase elsewhere. Why? Because some customers are just not the right fit for your business.</div>
<div>
<br>
Let's take a more in-depth look at this topic...<br>

While I'm not quite ready for hot chocolate yet, I am enticed by a warm cup of something in my hands...and if it has the tasted of Autumn? Even better!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--iBN-BpGS-8/Ulf_SwZhpmI/AAAAAAAAKi0/5_y9pZcFrzU/s1600/Pumpkin+Spice-55+SMALL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--iBN-BpGS-8/Ulf_SwZhpmI/AAAAAAAAKi0/5_y9pZcFrzU/s640/Pumpkin+Spice-55+SMALL.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
This belly-warming treat can be made with our without coffee....either way, this home-made version will beat-the-pants-off the artificially flavored versions you get at popular coffee shops...<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>INGREDIENTS:</b><br />
<br />
<ul><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9pcFh9bTwwg/UlgA_f-sueI/AAAAAAAAKjA/yEx6TtngPTA/s1600/untitled-1-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9pcFh9bTwwg/UlgA_f-sueI/AAAAAAAAKjA/yEx6TtngPTA/s200/untitled-1-2.jpg" width="131" /></a>
<li>1 cup Milk <i>(I use low-fat organic, but you can use whatever type of milk you prefer)</i></li>
<li>1-2 tbls. Pumpkin Puree <i>(I use homemade - you can find my recipe <a href="http://sewplicity.blogspot.com/2012/10/fall-food-fresh-pumpkin-puree.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>)</i></li>
<li>1-2 tsp. Sugar <i>(I use organic)</i></li>
<li>1/2 tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice</li>
<li>1 cup Fresh Brewed Coffee <i>(optional)</i></li>
<li>Fresh Whipped Cream <i>(totally optional, but oh-so worth it!)</i></li>
</ul>
<div>
This recipe makes one cup.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Whisk the sugar, puree and pumpkin pie spice into the milk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u8cC_ZsJKF8/UlgBZkD9sCI/AAAAAAAAKjI/Q_j5Bg8lfnA/s1600/untitled-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u8cC_ZsJKF8/UlgBZkD9sCI/AAAAAAAAKjI/Q_j5Bg8lfnA/s640/untitled-3.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Put the mixture into a pot and cook on low heat, checking and mixing often to prevent burning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2vs6-7DkciE/UlgByyWH22I/AAAAAAAAKjQ/8p0nAlOCLdE/s1600/untitled-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2vs6-7DkciE/UlgByyWH22I/AAAAAAAAKjQ/8p0nAlOCLdE/s640/untitled-4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While your milk is heating up, whip up some fresh whip cream if you feel so inclined. I use my immersion blender to make fast work of this task <i>(and I can make one serving at a time)</i>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C4-tbLzz73o/UlgCHFmLmVI/AAAAAAAAKjc/rfQeKbexqA8/s1600/untitled-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C4-tbLzz73o/UlgCHFmLmVI/AAAAAAAAKjc/rfQeKbexqA8/s640/untitled-5.jpg" width="422" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bRUyvAQtG_c/UlgCHOPaZ9I/AAAAAAAAKjY/_Xi3BhVGu4M/s1600/untitled-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bRUyvAQtG_c/UlgCHOPaZ9I/AAAAAAAAKjY/_Xi3BhVGu4M/s640/untitled-6.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pour your heated milk into a cup by itself, or into your cup of coffee....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QxRKzOjeY7U/UlgCTikaN-I/AAAAAAAAKjo/_yL3wlbRcLs/s1600/untitled-7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QxRKzOjeY7U/UlgCTikaN-I/AAAAAAAAKjo/_yL3wlbRcLs/s640/untitled-7.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Top off with that decadent whipped cream, and add a sprinkle of the pumpkins spice to finish it off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c3W4wVsI82A/UlgCdrqFAvI/AAAAAAAAKjw/FnZxmsH9JT0/s1600/untitled-9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c3W4wVsI82A/UlgCdrqFAvI/AAAAAAAAKjw/FnZxmsH9JT0/s640/untitled-9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sit down and enjoy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am happy to announce that I am now offering a couple of wipeable fabric options for my high chair covers!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/p480x480/1380462_10151870449072207_1121725012_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/p480x480/1380462_10151870449072207_1121725012_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Let me tell you a bit about what I'm offering and why....<br />
<br />
<b>What type of wipeable fabric do you offer?</b><br />
I am proud to have added a couple of <a href="http://www.babyvilleboutique.com/home" target="_blank">Babyville Boutique</a> PUL options to my fabric selection.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.babyvilleboutique.com/sites/all/themes/babyville_boutique/images/shared/logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.babyvilleboutique.com/sites/all/themes/babyville_boutique/images/shared/logo.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>What is PUL?</b><br />
PUL is a polyurethane laminated fabric that is waterproof, yet breathable. PUL has a fabric side and a laminated side. You will not see the laminated side of the fabric on your high chair cover...it will be on the interior of the cover. <br />
<br />
<b>Is it safe?</b><br />
One of the reasons I chose Babyville PUL is because it has met or exceeded the Consumer Product Safety requirements for Canada and the USA. <br />
<br />
<b>Can it be washed?</b><br />
Yes! This PUL can be machine washed using warm water and a mild detergent. The manufacturer recommends staying away from fabric softeners and bleach unless absolutely necessary. The fabric can either be line dried or tumble dried on a low setting.<br />
<br />
<b>Does it cost more, and if so, how much more?</b><br />
Yes. PUL costs almost twice as much as regular cotton. All covers made with PUL will cost $7.00 more than it's cotton counterpart.<br />
<br />
<b>Which fabric is right for me?</b><br />
Debating between cotton or PUL? Both have their positives, but it comes down to personal choice. Both options offer a soft, fabric surface for your baby. The PUL will be a bit more "shiny" as it is made from a polyester blend. If you prefer more natural products, or have a budget to stay within, you may want to stick with cotton. I offer organic cotton as an option as well! If you are looking for something that is very wipe-friendly, choose the PUL.<br />
<br />
<b>What patterns of PUL do you offer?</b><br />
Right now I am only offering a couple of pattern options. If there is a high demand for these, I will add more to my collection. <br />

<b>How do I order?</b><br />
Currently I only take custom orders through a wait list on my website <a href="http://www.sewplicity.com/reserveyourcover.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>Why has it taken you so long to offer a wipeable fabric?</b><br />
I know...my customers have been asking me to carry wipeable fabrics for quite some time, however I was not willing to do so until I found a fabric that tested safe for babies. Vinyl and Oilcloth are NOT safe, please do not purchase high chair covers, or any other baby product made from vinyl, oilcloth or any other treated fabric that has not been tested and met the CPSIA safety regulations.<br />
<br />
And there you have it! I make every effort to meet my customer's demands, however safety is my number one priority. I'm so happy this particular PUL meets both of my objectives!<br />
